Invisalign® gives you a straighter smile without the inconveniences of conventional braces. Read on to learn about Invisalign and how often you can expect new aligners during treatment. Invisalign patients see their dentist once every six weeks on average during treatment. These brief office visits allow the dental professional to check that your treatment is going as expected and provide the next set of aligners.
The frequency of getting new Invisalign aligners
To ensure the teeth keep moving with Invisalign, patients must switch out their aligner trays every two weeks throughout the treatment. Each new pair of aligners will bring the teeth closer to their desired position. Fortunately, the trips to the dental office will not be that frequent. Although every patient has a unique orthodontic treatment plan, the dentist will usually provide three sets of aligners to patients at each office visit. As a result, patients will usually only need to come in for a new set of aligners every six weeks.
The need for follow-up dental appointments
Patients who opt for Invisalign treatment need to be aware that treatment will begin with a consultation. The dentist will capture images of the teeth during this consultation and develop a personalized treatment plan for the patient based on the 3D scans.
Since the Invisalign process is unique to the patient, the frequency of dental visits to the office may also change. Invisalign patients are usually required to see their dentist every four to six weeks. These follow-up appointments are to check that the treatment is going according to plan. With these occasional dental appointments, the dentist can ensure that the aligners are working well.
Follow-up visits recommended by the dentist are not the only times an appointment will be necessary. If patients lose a set of clear aligners between appointments, they may need to visit the dentist to know if a new set is required or if it is time to switch to the next set of clear aligner trays.
If the dentist deems it appropriate, patients may be allowed to wear the current aligners for an extended period and skip the next set of aligners altogether. In other cases, the dental professional may simply order a new pair of aligners. However, it will take a few days for patients to obtain the new Invisalign aligner replacements. Getting a replacement tray may require new dental impressions, and patients may be required to wear the previous set of aligners until the new tray is ready.
If there are concerns that the Invisalign treatment is not producing visible results, a trip to the dental professional is in order. While most patients will have to wait a bit longer, Invisalign treatment may show effects in as little as two weeks for certain people. It may take three months for some people before they see a noticeable change in their smile. Some people may realize that their smiles have changed after about five to six months.
Suppose no results are apparent after wearing the aligners for 20 to 22 hours per day. In that case, patients should arrange an appointment with the dentist to ensure the treatment is still going to provide the anticipated outcome.
Preventing a lengthy treatment with Invisalign
Invisalign dentists suggest that patients wear their aligners for the whole two weeks, but there are a few additional steps to shorten the length of the treatment. Wearing the aligners as directed by the dentist each day for the duration of the treatment is the first thing patients can do to help speed up the process.
For the most part, patients should wear their Invisalign braces for at least 20-22 hours each day to get the most benefit from them. Failure to wear the aligner trays as directed may cause the treatment plan to go off course.
Monitoring and caring for the Invisalign aligners is an additional way to stay on track with the treatment plan. The teeth straightening treatment may be delayed if patients lose or misplace the aligners. Patients may need to wear the previous aligners in the series if the current ones get damaged.
